How To Buy Wine At Your Local Grocery Store
Fact: shopping for wine in a grocery store is perfectly acceptable – but it’s not always easy to find a great deal. Some wine enthusiasts shy away from buying wine at grocery store chains due to the (typically) high markup or limited selection.

4 Tips for choosing good wine in a wine store
My wife and I love to entertain, and we recently hosted some new friends for dinner. I had selected a few different reds - including one of the last remaining bottles of Claudine ’13 - to accompany our famous homemade pizzas. As I discussed the virtues of each bottle, I was asked a very familiar question:
WHAT DO YOU BUY WHEN YOU GO INTO A WINE STORE? ("I NEVER KNOW WHAT TO BUY!")
What happens in the wine industry when the economy shuts down
For the most part, wines in the U.S. are distributed one of two ways: either through a three-tiered distribution system or by direct-to-consumer sales. Each channel presents pros and cons for wineries, and most large wineries end up channeling a portion of their wine to each.
Decisions about which lane to choose are based on demand forecasts and made months in advance of the final sale. This typically occurs after the product is bottled, labeled and made ready for sale.
HOW NAPA VALLEY WINERIES ARE ADAPTING TO CORONAVIRUS: AN INSIDER'S LOOK
On March 16th, San Francisco Mayor London Breed issued a “shelter in place” order to the citizens of her city – a move which is calculated to have saved over 40,000 lives. This same day, Governor Gavin Newsom ordered all tasting rooms in California to close.
Having already endured 2 bouts of wildfires since 2017, Napa Valley has once again ground to a halt.
In Napa Valley alone, the wine industry brings in a staggering $9.4 billion dollars annually, with additional billions generated by the hospitality industry catering to visitors from all over the world. But with these visitors suddenly gone – how does one stay in business? Here are three ways wineries are adapting to the circumstances and bringing in some much needed revenue.
AGING AND DECANTING: WHEN IS A WINE READY TO DRINK?
A wine has not finished evolving simply because it is in the bottle. Like a living, breathing thing, it changes and takes on new characteristics as it ages. Because of this, there is no perfect way - or perfect time - to enjoy your special bottle. You should be able to drink it at any point that you decide.
POINTS TAKEN: UNDERSTANDING THE WINE RATING SYSTEM
The family of Claudine Wines are thrilled to share some exciting news: Our 2014 Napa Cabernet Sauvignon received a 92-point rating through Wine Enthusiast! It is our first ever rating, and one we’re pretty thrilled to share! So what does it mean to be a 92-point wine? Let us pour another glass of celebratory bubbly and we’ll tell you!
Where does our wine come from?
About 18 months after making our first vintage of wine, we were approached by a friend who works for a high-end winery with some excess Cabernet to sell. This was some amazing wine, and we had the opportunity to buy it at a great price.
